Treat Your Home Like an Office
- PM91, CNN iReport producer
I work from home every other week. Going from working in an office to working at home was definitely a new challenge. I had to discipline myself to look at my day just as I would if I were in the office.
+ Stick to a routine- get up at the same time that you would while you were working in the office. Make yourself breakfast, take a shower, get dressed. Treat your morning routine as though you were having to leave the house to "go to work".
+ Define an office space- don't stay in bed all day with your laptop. If you have access to a home office, use it! If not, set up a small desk area or work at the kitchen table.
+ Take your lunch break- go on a run, go to the grocery store, do a load of laundry. After your 30 or 60 minutes is up, go back into work mode and leave your personal tasks for after work.
+ Don't work with the TV on- even if you like a little white noise, use a radio or an ipod.
+ Plan out your day and schedule your day just like you would in the office- work until you usually would and then power off and enjoy your personal time. Don't get sucked into taking calls and e-mails into the night because you are home and available.
Working from home can be productive and provide the flexibility that professionals want and need for a great work/life balance. You just need to discipline yourself and maintain the professionalism that you would if you were in an office and allow yourself to be available to those that need to communicate with you.
