Residents of Plainview, Texas Dig Out After Historic Blizzard

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     JulieSwift and others in Plainview, Texas, spent yesterday afternoon shoveling the 2 to 3 inches of snow left after the blizzard. 'I didn’t have a real shovel, so I was using a chair,' she said. 'You know those plastic chairs that they have in classrooms with metal legs? I grabbed the legs and used the back of the chair. The guy was shoveling next door for an older lady I thought he had a real shovel. But he had a lid to a big plastic tub. That was funny.' The improvised snow-clearing devices didn’t stop there: Tractors were clearing the streets.

Plainview residents began the task of cleaning up today after a record blizzard dumped 8 inches of snow on the city. In true Texan fashion, neighbors helped each other dig out. Children out of school also pitched in with their families to clear snow from driveways and sidewalks.

Tractors and snow plows were out clearing the access roads for citizens eager to get back to a sense of normal. The Wal-Mart parking lot had snow piles as tall as some cars left from plowing. I-27 also reopened to motorists. Other streets in the city, including Broadway, downtown near the courthouse, were covered in a wet, slushy mess.

Meanwhile, one business took advantage of the blizzard to do a little creative advertising. A snowman in front of the Pollard used car dealership reads, "Just Like The Snow Our Prices Are Falling!"

Families enjoyed the snow at a local park. One father brought his two boys to play. They enjoyed belly-flopping into the snow drifts around the playground.

Students on the Wayland Baptist University campus had an easier time commuting after a small tractor cleared the parking lots and roads on campus. They had the day off again today. Some of them used their free time to build Mount Rushmore out of snow.
