Down Syndrome Basketball Star Shines
- dsashin, CNN iReport producer
At the start of the middle school basketball season Michael Lent , an 11-year-old child with Down Syndrome, was cut from the basketball team. Head Coach Jon Pulice asked Michael to stay on as the team's equipment manager. Michael did.
In the final game of the season, Coach Pulice looked down to the end of the bench with 3 minutes to go, he gave Michael a jersey and told him he was going into the game. Michael not only got on the court, he hit a jump shot which brought everyone even the opposing team to their feet.
As time ran out, Michael's teammates, from Walnut Creek Middle School in Erie, PA, were so excited that they picked Michael up and carried him off the court. Michael's parents were in tears and posted on line that this was one of the greatest moments in their lives. Michael, on his teammates shoulders raised his fist in the air and sreamed out I did it! Yes he did, he taught us all a valuable lesson.
Word from his teammates is that he just might be selected as the team's MVP. Michael's teammate Jack Gallagher said during the celebration that he was hoping Michael would scream out, I'm going to Disney World. If the Superbowl winning Quarterback get's to go to Disney World then Michael should be going too!
