Defendant and his father manhandled while mother has a heart attack in the Russian courtroom.

The limits of what is possible in contemporary Russian courtrooms have been extended yet again today. Simonovsky Court in Moscow had a hearing on the case of Daniil Konstantinov. He has been detained since March 22, 2012, on the murder charges. He has an iron cast alibi, as at the time of the murder he was celebrating his mother’s birthday in a restaurant, 20 kilometers from the crime scene. Also, the expertise did not find any traces of DNA, belonging to the victim, on Konstantinov’s clothes. The Human Rights center Memorial is considering the Konstantinov’s case a political one.

Today the court was deciding on extending the detention. The judge declared the alibi defeated, but declined to disclose any details. The defendant appealed for replacement of the judge, twice, the judge declined both times. What happened next, was twittered by the human rights activist, Anna Karetnikova. The defendant’s father was carried from the courtroom by the police. Police tried grabbing arms and legs of the defendant’s mother as well, but she felt chest pains and fell on the floor. For half an hour this woman was lying on the floor without any help, before the ambulance arrived. The defendant refused to leave the room for the lunch break and was also carried away by his arms and legs.

The court has extended the detention till March 22, when it will be exactly a year in prison for Daniil Konstantinov.

It is very difficult to translate the Russian word “bespredel”, which is the best word I can find to describe the above mentioned events. The dictionary gives “lawlessness” as the closest in meaning. However, “never ending and constantly escalating lawlessness” would be much closer.
