DoD Federal Civilian Couples 40% impact in income - the burden could be unbearable

The forced spending cuts presented for DoD contemplates an impact of 20% reduction in salaries for the remaining days of the fiscal year. One day per week until September for a total of 176 days. For any individual it is a big impact coming up and adjustments are already being contemplated. But there is a blind spot that had being forgotten or our lawmakers do not intend to recognize and is that across the DoD there are couples that both are federal servants. For those families, 20% reduction for each of them will be an impact of 40% of their income. The reduction in the household income is almost equivalent to one individual of the couple being unemployed. For those families with kids in college, paying with high sacrifice tuition probably will not be able o pay tuition on August 2013 when tuitions bills are due in most universities. Mortgages payment will be unaffordable and bank not willing to work with these cases since are losses for them. Therefore, federal servants will loose their houses in foreclosure, thanks to elected lawmakers not willing to work for those who elected them. It should be considered for couples of federal servants to only furlough one of the individual to prevent the such great impact. The American people shall be able to freeze lawmakers’ salaries and per diems as long as last their inability to get an agreement and for incompetence of not fulfilling of their duties. Federal servants already had being targeted with a two years pay freeze and now 20 % (individual) or 40% (couple) reduction in salary. Really, the Congress is doing a witch hunt against the federal servants. This is a perfect example of what I learned in Law school, not everything legal is moral; and not everything moral necessarily is legal. The impact will be felt not immediately but let’s revisit the topic by the end of May-June time frame. It is sad that our representatives protect parties hiden agendas rather that working for the people who elected them, good to keep in mind for the next elections to elect the House of Representatives members.
