Bitter pill: The cost of health care in the U.S.

    Bitter Pill

My husband who is a professor became ill in 2008. It has been catastrophic. We had what we thought as good health insurance. My husband, Don has been diagnosed with a Chronic illness. We have been fighting the endless doctors and hospitals and other vendors by asking for patience with us as we have at least sixty different doctors/etc. to pay. Berlin Wheeler and NCO financial refuses to accept what we can pay a month. I called the Missouri, which is where we live, Attorney Generals' Office to find out what our rights are as a consumer and discovered we have very few rights. We owe so much money and when we indicate and pay a collector such as Berlin wheeler or NCO financial that it is all we can pay, the threaten to sue us. Berlin Wheeler says they can sue us even if we are making payments. I called the attorney generals office and that is correct. So, no matter what we do to try and keep from being sued, it the collection agency is not happy with it they can determine to sue us. And we have been sued and we fear that we are going to be sued over and over again. My husband is able to work and the stress of the medical financial on our family has taken its toll. I fear that my husband or myself will get sick again due to stress alone. We have written letters and we were interviewed by ABC News when the Health Care Reform Act was Approved about the issue of "Preexisting Condition". We had hoped that from that local interview that the hospitals may have mercy and they did not. Actually what brought about my husband's long term illness was that a "non-profit" hospital neurologist that was employed by this hospital did not read my husband MRI nor did the radiologist read it. A report was written that his MRI was normal but my husband actually had a leftomenginal enhancement of the brain. It was not until six days later when my husband was at another local hospital that they discovered this. My husband almost died from this. We tried getting the hospital to accept some responsibility to no avail. This particular hospital is still collecting money from us for those bill. We had written letters to no avail as well. We have a young son and our future hope for him for college and dreams for our family have been taken away from us. We have done everything we know to keep from being sued and it seems that there is nothing we can do, even paying these collections agency what we can afford will not help us. Please help get our story out there. We are in hopes of making these kinds of situations known in hopes of making it illegal if a collection agency is getting paid, they can't sue someone's good faith effort. Diane Denton
