Brutality by Jamaat men in Bangladesh

Rampage by Jamaat-Shibir men continue across the country after their leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee was handed death sentence by the tribunal set up to try the perpetrators of the 1971 liberation war. Several policemen have been killed and scores injured in recent days trying to tackle the violence. In this photo from Bangla'r Chokh agency, policemen stand around the dead body of their colleague in Jhenaidah. Jamaat men hacked him to death and brutally gauged out one of his eyes.

The Jamaat men have also torched rain compartments, carried out massive vandalism at government offices and establishments, left 40,000 people without power in Chapai Nawabgonj's Kansat after causing losses worth 2.5 billion Taka at a power station, uprooted rail lines, attacked Hindu minorities and vandalised temples and Hindu households. Dozens have been left dead in about a week of violence all over the country. Curfews had to be imposed in some places temporarily, while paramilitary and military forces also had to be deployed at a number of places.
