That is just for the card. You still have to pay to load fares on it. Why is MTA introducing this cost? Because so many folks just flick it on the ground causing litter problems. You can keep your old card and reload it at no additional cost. The change will save MTA $2 million in card production costs and provide $10 million in income annually. The added bonus is reduced litter. One group of folks not likely to embrace this change is the folks who collect these cards looking for "fares" still left on them.
