'The Bully Effect': Making it stop

Ignore them, they'll leave you alone doesn't work.

My bullying started in 2nd grade and lasted through my senior year. My parents told me to "just ignore them and they will leave you alone." It sounds good on paper but doesn't work in real life. The more I didn't fight back the more I was beaten, slammed into lockers, had my clothing and personal effects destroyed. To not stand up for yourself doesn't keep the bullies away. It destroys your self-esteem and leaves you feeling humiliated.
The reason for my parents taking this stance was simple. They felt it was too embarrising to have to go the the school to deal with me and any behavioral issues. Therefore, I hid all of it for my entire school career.
The worse thing was that the teachers and principal agreed with my parents. Five or six students would attack me on the playground and the principal told me I needed to work harder to get along. He also told my parents that I started it. I guess it was easier to deal the one kid getting picked on then have to call the parents of the six more popular kids I had accused.
I listen to what's going on today and have reached a conclusion. Schools don't have a clue how to fix this problem today anymore then they did then back in 1977.
