Chavez: a champion for the poor

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Veteran iReporter omekongo says the late Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, helped many in Venezuela out of poverty. "We can't in the U.S. always looks at somebody and just label them as a dictator and put them in same the class as people such as [ousted Iraqi president] Saddam Hussein, just because we may not like what they did," he argues. "At the end of the day, he's somebody who really wanted to help others to do better. For that he should be respected, even by those who did not agree with his policies."
    - sarahbrowngb, CNN iReport producer

Like any leader, or any person for that matter, Hugo Chavez was a flawed individual. We should not let his opposition to many policies of the United States blind us for seeing the good he did for many people. He was not a hero for every Venezuelan by any means, but ultimately, I believe his intentions were generally in the right place.
