    Your thoughts on Hugo Chavez

A History of Human Rights Violations

The President´s death does not fill me with happiness or sadness, he was as human as the rest of us, and I believe no human being should be happy for another human being´s death. Nevertheless, I think Hugo Chávez should be remembered for what he was, a ruthless, democratically elected, egocentric autocrat, with no respect whatsoever for the rule of law or the Human Rights of the Venezuelan people. Take for example the ex judge María Afiuni case, in which both the rule of law and the protection of Human Rights were violated at the desire of Chávez´s command.

Let´s remember Chávez as the greatest manipulator of propaganda in the republican history of Venezuela. Let´s remember him for what he was, not for what people idealized he was. I know that for many he represented a positive change, a leader who gave "power" to the masses, but in reality the masses were never empowered by his regime, but were given a false speech of blaming the U.S capitalism and the higher classes of the country for their situation. But I tell the people of my country, do not be fooled by the very same person, who has left our democratic institutions in chaos, who worked to build a complete control of power among the Judiciary, the Legislative and the Executive branches of power, who worked with more money than any other Venezuelan President, and we are now submerged in a debt for the next 20 years or so to China. Do not be fooled by the one person who could have done so much for the poor, but instead decided to superficially alleviate poverty, leaving it worst once oil prices get down, or worst once oil is no longer the primary source of energy for the World.

Please let´s remember Chávez as a necessary, if you will, evil to awake our nation´s political consciousness, to look back and learn from our mistakes, to look back and know that we want truly independent powers, to build a nation of free and safe working citizens. And not this chaos and war-like murder tolls.

That is how I will remember Chávez, is what I have always known about his gubernatorial style, and this is not likely to change after his death.
