An attack on Israel or just African neighbors dropping by to say hello?

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     iReporter Chami Zemach's friend, Itai Rubin, captured these extraordinary images of a swarm of locusts descending on their farming community in the southern Negev desert in Israel. The swarm had come all the way from Sudan, via Egypt, and had attacked several farmers' crops in the area in their quest for food. The images, however, show a lighter side to the invasion, with local children happily running through swarms or curiously picking the unsuspecting locusts up for examination.

Not a nuclear attack or a terrorist attack, but this one came all the way from Sudan to the south part of Israel and it is harmful !

A huge swarm of locusts attacks the wide fields of fruits and vegetables on the south of Israel since yesterday (Mars 5). The swarm came from Egypt through the Sinai Peninsula, taken by the wind and attacked a wide area where farmers grow lots of tomatoes, herbs, potatoes and peppers.

As the farmers are trying to fight the swarm in all kinds of ways, their kids were happy to dance with the locusts, play with them and be a part of that once in a decade phenomena.

The desert locusts are originally from Sudan in East Africa. They become huge swarms after heavy winters in the desert of Sudan, when the local bush is not enough for their extreme diet and they have to look for food for their endless families. Once in few years they start looking for areas with wide crops and then they settle in those places until they eat all the crops or until they die when the weather becomes too hot or when they are being sprayed with pesticides.
They move first to Egypt and if it is not enough then they keep on moving to Israel, passing the Suez channel and the desert of Sinai.

Enjoy the photos taken by local farmer Yali Rubin of Kadesh Barnea village.
