Bitter pill: The cost of health care in the U.S.

    Get a GRIP

It turns out that 10% to 15% of the people my age (63!) develop Aortic Valve Stenosis and about half require surgery within 3 years. Some die before it is diagnosed or die as a result of corporate death panels telling them their insurance refuses to cover the 9up to) $200,000 procedure. Medical tourism is an alternative.

Me? I had it replaced in the top HMO facility in Northern California for an out-of-pocket co-pay of $600 which another HMO covered. My cost? 6 days in the hospital and walking 2.5 miles a day for about 12 weeks of recovery.
