    Your thoughts on Hugo Chavez

    The best and the worst

When I came to Venezuela in 1999, it was clear that the Venezuelan poor and middle class were desperate. They found hope in Chavez. He seemed to be a wonderful candidate. Then, his rhetoric changed. The militant rhetoric harkened back to old world dictatorships that scared middle class supporters. The name of the country was changed, and other non-economic ideological changes that didn't do much to feed people. Chavez was just what Venezuelans needed - but he went too far - and now it seems that they are doomed to an even more divided populace... Chavez made very real positive changes for the country's poor, but he shook the foundations of the country's middle class and rich in ways that perhaps weren't conducive to dialogue. I hope his legacy isn't one of of division.
