The challenge of preparing healthy food at home is to make it taste good so that kids and adults will enjoy eating it and incorporate this into the family’s lifestyle. It would probably be too much to ask people to give up on their favorite foods which most likely have high amounts of processed ingredients, preservatives and small amounts of the good stuff–vitamins and minerals and other important nutrients.
Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately), more people are considering eating more healthily because they’re already forced to by their doctors because they have numerous issues that pose a risk to their health. Lifestyle and other diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and even certain cancers are linked to poor food choices whose bad effects have accumulated over the years.
As such, these individuals are now more careful when dining out. They cut down either the amount of food that they eat and/or incorporate healthier foods in their diet. At home, more time is devoted to making dishes with wholesome ingredients rather than making everything instant which most likely is full of preservatives though healthier options are becoming more accessible.
Any type of food from soups to entrees, desserts to beverages can be prepared more healthily simply by making certain adjustments that cut down on fats, cholesterol and excess sodium. Unless one is vegetarian or vegan, try out recipes that aren’t too different from what you and your family enjoy. That way there isn’t much of a shock that they’re eating such strange looking and tasting food.
No one is prohibiting anybody from eliminating meat, poultry and dairy from one’s diet. If a person is so used to these types of food, it could be a shock to his or her system to totally quit cold turkey and eat an all-vegetable diet. Asidfe from this, it would lead to feelings of deprivation which one doesn’t want to experience on the dinner table. After all, one eats to enjoy.
The key is moderation. Even the occasional bag of chips or pizza is alright as long as you do not eat the whole bag or box. Why not dip the chips in a natural vegetable salsa instead or roll some lettuce, arugula and sprouts in your pizza?
Other easy tips would be to prepare more dishes that are simply and naturally healthier than others: preparing more salads (try to go organic as much as possible) is an easy way to add fiber and micro-nutrients to one’s plate. Replace whole milk and other ingredients with low fat, low sodium versions.
