International Women's Day Protest in Bucharest, Romania
In a speech at the beginning of the protest organizers asked for institutions like the police, the courts and the medical system to show real support towards the victims.
The need for women's shelters, legal centers, counseling centers and a 24/7 emergency hotline were stressed. Another proposal asked for emergency centers for rape victims, where they could get free legal and psychological counseling.
Because it shows leniency towards the aggressors, protesters asked that all forms of violence against women be stricken from the arbitration law that makes it compulsory for the parties to seek arbitration before going to court.
Another demand was that sex trafficking be a bigger priority in terms of public policy, with real programs to prevent it and to protect its victims.
Protesters were also there to express their outrage at a recent opinion held by a local politician who, in a facebook post, advocated the sterilization of roma women.
Protesters marched from Romana Square to Victoriei Square, in front of the Government building, in what is becoming a yearly event.
