The Rainforest Action Network and the demonization of palm oil

The West ostensibly operates on a fine set of principles such as democracy, freedom of speech and all the ideals inspired by Greek philosophers. If you didn’t like those, do not worry for we’ve got others. Apologies for the shameless borrow from Groucho Marx but not since Rufus T Firefly assumed the Presidency of Freedonia in Duck soup has there been a leadership model quite like this! “The last man nearly ruined this place; he didn’t know what to do with it,” sings Firefly; “If you think this country’s bad off now, just wait till I get through with it!”

So is there something wrong with western moral leadership? I have always been baffled at the degree of hatred that some western governments evoke from certain quarters that would drive these people to self-immolation and to commit acts of terror.

I would posit that there is something seriously awry when the actions of western governments can drive people to a feeling of such helplessness that their only response is terrorism. My reaction in the past has been that these people are gooks who have gone off their rails; that they have a warped sense of values to undervalue human life and property to such an extent that they are regarded coldly as mere collateral damage. This piece does not seek to support or justify the heinous response of these terrorists but surely western governments should take stock and assess whether our policies have been righteous and honorable?

There’s no doubt that western governments and their fourth estate, the media has gone down the path of perfidy to demonize anything that they have identified as a threat.

I remember in the 60s reading in the Reader’s Digest, no less, this morally reprehensible “manufactured” story of how the Chinese leadership led by Mao Tse-tung had ground up the aged in China into fertilizer to help his great leap forward! The story has more spin than a wildly gyrating washing machine but to an impressionable young child, it was eminently believable especially as it came from a venerable source such as the Reader’s Digest and I grew up hating the evil Commies in China. It wasn’t till my postgraduate days that I woke up from my stupor and the BS meter (at least that’s what they would call it in America) was set off in my mind in what was a seminal “Santa Claus awakening” moment!

Nothing and no one it seems, is spared so long as they do not kowtow to the mighty powers that be in the west. Having control of global media, we control the minds of the world! Thus, someone like Hugo Chavez is routinely castigated in the western media despite his contribution towards the drastic reduction of poverty in Venezuala from 71% in 1996 to 23% in 2010, or that Venezuela, long ago, met its UN Millennium Development targets, both of which made Chavez wildly popular with the masses in Venezuela.

This is precisely how the campaign against palm oil has been waged. Fearful of the commodity’s hyper yields and consequent popularity due to its innate qualities and competitive pricing and running out of ideas as to how to protect their indigenous edible oilseed industries which are hapless in facing the palm oil juggernaut in the open market, surrogate green groups are recruited to plan and execute spurious anti-palm oil campaigns based on “manufactured” and false evidence in return for millions in “funding”. That is precisely how Italian civil libertarian group, Libertiamo exposed is the modus operandi of the European Commission and how the Rainforest Action Network came into the highly profitable business of palm oil bashing! No one is spared, not even Dr Oz, who had the temerity to recommend red palm oil as good for life extension based on tons of peer reviewed scientific studies.

Could it be that the West, which had given the world the likes of Machiavelli have become so enamoured of the dark arts of subterfuge and stratagem that it’s become like a bad habit that’s hard to break!

Note: Deforestation Watch aka Melbourne Zoo Watch was originally established to drive green issues on palm oil mainstream. However, Deforestation Watch has in the course of its existence evolved into Melbourne Zoo Watch and now considerable time and energy is spent on exposing the sly misdeeds and devious schemes of the Melbourne Zoo in using palm oil to surreptitiously raise funds for the zoo. www.deforestationwatch.org
