A dog has been shot dead in front of his owner in Lesvos Greece. The dog was killed on Sunday 10th March 2013 in front of the owner by a 75 YEAR OLD neighbor who killed the dog with a shotgun.

The owner informed the Police Department of Lesvos and has made a complaint against the killer for unlawful use of a weapon and for violation of animal welfare law 4039/2012 “protection of pets” .

We understand the killer has not been arrested as yet, when he is he will appear before the Attorney of Lesvos.

We are reporting the incident that occurred in Vrisa Polichnitos Lesbos Greece on Sunday 10th March 2013 when a pet dog was fatally shot, the shooting happened in front of the dogs owner, the owner witnessed his dog being shot dead by his neighbor and can testify to his identity.

We understand the offence has to be reported to Police Department of Lesvos within a 24 hour period and the owner/witness did make a complaint to the Police Department Lesvos within the time period required.

As you are aware, the Killing of a dog or animal in Greece is subject to prosecution under Greek animal welfare act (4039/12)

Article 16 - Abuse of animals
A. Subject to special cases specifically provided by existing EU and national legislation and the provision of third sentence of paragraph 4 of Article 9 prohibits torture, abuse, poor and brutal treatment any animal species, and any act violence against him.

Article - 20 Penalties
2. Violators of the provisions of paragraphs A and B of Article 16 is punishable by imprisonment of at least one year and a fine of five thousand (5,000) to fifteen thousand (15,000) euros.

Unfortunately, the time limit of 24 hours has passed and the accused was not arrested by the Police Department of Lesvos, although Vrisa is a small village of only 600 inhabitants and the identity of the accused known.

Can we please have an official statement for media/press to the following questions.

1. Was an order issued to arrest the accused of this crime YES or NO?
