Work and family: Making it work

    Balanced Work/Life Married Couple

My husband and I (Nick and Beth) both work full-time while raising two children. Work life balance has always been hard to find. A recent change has made life easier for us as a family. ~ Recently one of us began working remotely from home (me, Beth) for a company while the other (Nick) works a traditional office position. Recently I left a leadership management role to find work/life balance as a mom for my family. Since I value quality time with my family I chose to leave a leadership position at this point in my career as a young (30-something) professional in order to find a work/life balance to fit personal family values.
Beyond work, Nick and I find ways to be active in our children’s lives (Ryan – 9, Dana – 6) that go beyond school work. This gives us quality time together as a family and allows Nick and me to continue practicing leadership skills. Extra-curricular family activities include many scouting events, which teach our kids to have good morals and values in life. These events have led us into leadership roles including Cub Master (Nick) Den Leader (Nick), Webmaster (Beth), and Fundraiser (Beth) for a Cub Scout Pack and as a Cookie Manager (Beth) for a Daisy Troop.
With a busy schedule and as scouting season wraps up, I (Beth) find myself unprepared to run my first mini-marathon (bucket list item after recovering from a stroke in 2007-08) so I recently signed up as a volunteer runner for my son’s Track & Field team.
Beyond this we live a very nice life as past leader/managers while surviving nicely as we have a ton of fun together as a family!
