Venice, Italy: Off The Beaten Path

Venice, Italy is a beautiful city, but it can get a little boring. Like many great European cities, there are enough awesome buildings, cathedrals and secluded streets to keep most photogs busy for weeks. This can lead to scenic overload and often sends me searching for something different.

As it turns out, I didn't have to venture far. I simply hopped aboard a vaporetto (water taxi) and stayed on for the entire route. After stops at the Rialto Bridge and St. Mark's Square, the boat headed out of town towards Murano. Leaving the Grand Canal, we headed south, hooking around the east side of the island to go north. This part of Venice is decidedly more industrial and less pretty than much of the city. Lots of ship yards and such.

I managed to snap a few cool shots of the landscape, even with heavy cloud cover and occasional rain. The images aren't what most people think of when they imagine Venice, but it's real.
