    Exploding Wildflowers in the Desert

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Photographer Andrew Pielage of Phoenix, Arizona, is enjoying the 'exploding' bursts of colorful wildflowers in the desert this spring. While 'wildflowers are never a guarantee in the desert spring,' APizm said he is seeing more wildflowers than in the past few seasons. 'The desert really comes to life with the bright yellows, purples, oranges and whites where you would really only see green and brown otherwise.' His last image was selected as CNN's Travel Photo of the Day for April 5, 2013.

This season has seen more rain than last year, but the overall Phoenix Sky Harbor reporting station is below normal for the year, according to CNN Weather.

Andrew Pielage is nominated for an iReport Award in Compelling Imagery. Go here to see all the finalists and vote.

When you think of the deserts of Arizona what comes to mind? Just a bunch of sun, sand and plants that prick you right? Well you are not far off but with record amounts of rainfall in Arizona this season, the desert is putting on quite a show of wildflowers. Yes, you heard it right, wildflowers. Popular varieties include lupine, desert marigold, fairy dusters and gold poppy, just to name a few.

It’s a special time for us desert dwellers.

If you make a trip to Arizona for the wildflowers here is a good rule of thumb: Look for wildflowers in preserve areas that face north. This is because the early spring sun will dry out rainfall faster.

I hope you enjoy them as much as we do.
