Spring in the San Francisco Bay Area

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     garyashley photographed the blooming flowers around the San Francisco Bay Area in late March and early April. He says he wanted to capture the stunning beauty of California's wildflowers, especially in their location of the highly urbanized San Francisco area. 'When people think of the Bay Area, they think of the great cities like San Francisco, but there is another side to this place. A lot of protected wilderness right in the midst of the urban sprawl. It's something the citizens here have worked very hard to keep,' he said.

His second picture was featured as CNN's Travel Photo of the Day for May 8, 2014.

There's a lot more to the Bay Area than the cities of San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose. There is a surprising amount of wild space, and it is just now bursting with spring wildflowers. Here are images from two of my favorite Bay Area wildflower spots - Mount Diablo in Contra Costa county and Edgewood Park in San Mateo county.
