    Earth Day Protests

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Journalist Ford Shankle watched as more than 100 people protested the controversial Marcellus Shale gas drilling project in western Pennsylvania. They picketed outside a regional office of the Department of Environmental Protection in Pittsburgh.

Their voices must have been heard -- DEP Community Relations Coordinator, John Poister, came outside to tell the protesters he would personally contact state officials to help improve the dialogue between citizens and officials, said Shankle.

Fracking is a very controversial issue in the Northeast U.S., not a good subject to bring up at a family reunion, nor a party. There are the supporters, many of whom benefit financially, and those who have horror stories about chemical spills and polluted drinking water. The national press ignores the issue, because the gas and oil industry buys millions of dollars worth of cannot offend an advertiser. There are real stories, by real people that never get coverage.
