World Tai Chi & Qigong Day in New Egypt & Chesterfield, NJ
Almost 50 eager people joined together and moved as one in beautiful, flowing, mindful steps in front of the American Legion in New Egypt on Saturday, April 27. This marks a historic moment for New Egypt as this is the first time the tiny town celebrated World Tai Chi and Qigong Day! The event attracted people from as far away as Hazlet, NJ and Bucks County, PA.
In the words of Bill Douglas, founder of World Tai Chi & Qigong Day and author of the Complete Idiot’s Guide to Tai Chi and QiGong, “World Tai Chi & Qigong Day occurs because thousands worldwide who share a common vision of hope & healing for our planet and her people come together each year to organize events in over 70 nations, on the last Saturday of April at 10 am local time worldwide.” All 50 States participate in this event, which dates back over 10 years.
The International Guide of T’ai Chi Chih®, Antonia Cooper, OSF, lead the group in a practice on the lawn in front of the American Legion. The group consisted of fellow teachers, students, and those who have never experienced T’ai Chi. There is much scientific research supporting the health benefits derived from T’ai Chi and Qigong: improved balance, reduction in high blood pressure, better sleep quality, increased immunity, as well as being recommended by the Arthritis Foundation and Parkinson’s groups. T’ai Chi Chih in particular is researched by UCLA and has been written about in the AARP magazine.
Local teacher, Siobhan Hutchinson, has seen her classes grow in size not only in New Egypt, but throughout Central New Jersey and Bucks County, Pennsylvania, especially with seniors as these movements may be done seated as well as standing.
To support this event local authors donated their books and area businesses offered gifts as giveaway items: Marti Rulli’s book Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour, Lo Anne Mayer’s book Celestial Conversations: Healing Relationships after Death; Gerry Gavin’s book Messages from Margaret (Louise Hay pub); T’ai Chi Chih: Joy thru Movement photo textbook; Basket of Organic Goat Milk Soap from local La Vie en Rose; 1hr Swedish massage by Massage Delivery, Inc; and Coupons from the New Egypt Marketplace.
Following the hospitality of having a potluck feast at the American Legion, participants then traveled to Chesterfield to enjoy practicing at the beautiful landscaped grounds of Paradise Organic CSA Farms and Vineyard. After walking the replica hedge maze of Hampton Court on the grounds, every participant received a gift of fresh herbs, lettuce, and kale. People are already asking about next year’s event and Siobhan was invited to hold T’ai Chi Chih classes at Paradise.
