    Royal festivities in Amsterdam

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Photographer MartinvdB was in the square in front of the royal palace in Amsterdam Tuesday as Holland's much loved Queen Beatrix formally abdicated and handed the throne to her son, Willem-Alexander. The sea of orange and scores of smiling faces bore testimony to the happy atmosphere of the event -- held on a national holiday. "It was amazing, very crowded with thousands of people," he said. "It was lovely to see all these enthusiasts chatting and shouting and yelling." The new king is also well liked by the Dutch, he says, although he says many prefer his wife, Queen Maxima, who is from Argentina. "She is very beautiful. The wife makes the man, if you see what I mean," he says.
