May Day Protests in DC Turn Violent

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Photographer Michael Kandel was out at the May Day protest in Washington yesterday evening when protesters veered off the marching path and stormed a GAP store. Police intervened to secure the entrance and a skirmish broke out, according to CNN. 'With protesters inside, and more attempting to gain entrance, police began pushing people away, and pulling demonstrators from the store. As a result, protesters fought back and what ensued was a brawl. At least 5 different fights broke out - protesters and police were thrown to the ground, and others were violently screaming at one another,' he said.

May Day protests in Washington D.C. began peacefully, with a march down 14th street towards the White House. Mid-way through, protesters veered off of the planned route and made their way down Connecticut Avenue. Along the way, they pivoted and spontaneously rushed a GAP clothing store to protest the practices of corporate America.

Police moved in to secure the entrance when all hell broke loose. Protesters fought to gain entrance, while police fought to keep them away. At least one arrest was confirmed.

After some time, order was restored and the march restarted - traveling down Connecticut Avenue towards the White House. Upon arrival, protesters were confronted by a group of White Pride demonstrators carrying confederate flags and wearing anti-gay clothing.

After harsh words were exchanged, a second brawl broke out which was put down by uniformed Secret Service, resulting in at least one arrest.
