    Your 1920s parties

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     kkalkman hosted a 1920s-themed party for her 25th birthday in April. The party included signature drinks, themed food, silent movies and decade-appropriate decorations. One of her top tips for hosting a successful party is paying attention to the invite list. 'The guest list is very important. I invited anyone who I thought would have a blast and who is intriguing,' she said. 'I didn't care about having a crowded house -- it's all or nothing. I mean, Gatsby let anyone come to his parties -- that's what made them so "great".'

Everyone likes a good party, and event planning is one of my favorite pastimes. This year for my 25th birthday, I threw a "Great Gatsby" themed party in honor of the book and new movie release. To make it the most memorable birthday for myself and guests, I honed in on popular social media outlets; a Pinterest board for 1920s inspiration, a hashtag for Instagram/Twitter and a Facebook event page for all the details. I even created a photo backdrop with my boyfriend Jake Murray (http://www.murr-art.com) and friends, Dave Armstrong (http://davearmstrongart.blogspot.com) and Rachel Dangerfield (http://imaginarybeast.com). It is inspired by Georges Méliès's "A Trip to the Moon". It's perfect for guests to pose in front of. The resulting party so surpassed my expectations that I felt like Jay Gatsby himself!

For the opening night premiere of the movie next Thursday (5/9/13) I also created an event on Facebook for those who are coming to the movie with us all. We have reserved seating in the Arena Grand (http://www.arenagrand.com) balcony and are dressing up again! A little party never killed nobody...

You can also view on Instagram the live feed from the party by using #TheGreatBday or go to the compiled public album on Facebook here..

Here are other blogs that featured the party:

The Flapper: A splash of St. Germain, Champagne, Raspberries

The Dapper: Gin, Tonic Water, Lime Juice

Macaroons and other fine desserts from Pistacia Vera
