Kentucky Oaks 2013

This is my 19th straight year coming down to Derby weekend. My favorite day, however, is Friday-- Kentucky Oaks Day-- when the main race is for the 3 year old Fillies.
The crowd is usually around 100,000 people, as opposed to Derby Day when there are about 150,000. On Oaks Day you can walk around without a problem, the lines are pretty short for everything-- bathroom, food and ticket windows. You can get a group of people together in your own chair circle and just enjoy the day.
Yesterday was a perfect weather day. Mostly cloudy with spurts of sun, and temperatures in the mid 70’s. It just doesn’t get much better than that.
I also love the people watching on Oaks Day. Everyone is wearing their pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness that Churchill Downs started promoting several years ago, and has become the preferred color on Oaks Day.
If the Kentucky Derby is on your bucket list, I suggest adding one more day to your trip and attend the Oaks along with the Derby.
