    Ravenna Ohio Fire Chief's Funeral

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Larry Shafer was one of the Ohio National Guardsmen who opened fire on Kent State University students protesting the Vietnam War in 1970. Four students died, and Shafer was one of the defendants in the trials that followed.

Shafer died Friday, a day before the 43rd anniversary of the shootings. He had served as a fire chief, city councilman and safety training compliance officer in Ravenna, Ohio.

RyanPKing says Shafer and his family lived with threats ever since the shootings. Years after the shootings, Shafer said he had remorse about shooting into the crowd, but feared for his life, according to news reports. "I feel there were many victims that day," the iReporter said. The iReporter said Shafer was well liked in his community over the past 40 years, and the mood was somber at Monday's funeral.
