Climbing the crater of Mayon Volcano

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Filipino iReporter Sherbien has made several trips to the Mayon volcano in the Philippines, which sent out a massive cloud of ash and rocks earlier this week, killing four climbers and their guide. "I was shocked when I heard the news, so sad and got depressed," he said. "[I think] mountaineers will be prohibited to climb the crater for 2-3 years." While he has reached the top he has yet to reach the volcano's crater, and despite the tragedy still hopes to do so.

It was 9pm of April 18, 2013 and I'm rushing to the bus terminal going to Legaspi, Albay...This is my dream - of climbing the summit and crater of world's perfect cone volcano, Mt. Mayon... This is one of my dangerous but exciting adventure so far as mountaineer and travel wanderlust... But when I reached the terminal, the last bus already left... I'm so depressed... Climbing mountains is what I considered my personal happiness...

I try to convince myself that mountains are there and I can still climb the summit of Mt. Mayon... not until I heard the news yesterday...

The treacherous beauty of the volcano I dearly and obsessively loved erupted releasing ash and boulder killing 4 foreigners and a Filipino tour guide...

It shocked me... Then I heard a news from my fellow mountaineers based in Legaspi that due to the violent eruption, climbing the summit / crater of the volcano will be prohibited starting that day...

I keep silent and offer prayers but deep inside me, I regretted not climbing the volcano before that incident...

    I loved Mayon....

Mayon volcano is our first bonding with my fellow Manila iReporters where we climbed until camp 2 of Mayon to witness the full lunar eclipse in 2011.

I went to Mayon last August 2012 with my fellow mountaineer to climb the knife edge of the volcano... But my ultimate dream is climbing it's crater....

Maybe, it's not yet the time for me and beautiful Mayon to experience her intriguing crater... I also pray for the families of the victims of her unpredicted madness....
