    The role of protein in diet and weight loss

     

    A recent post from the New York Times highlights the use of chia seeds to make healthy drinks with extra protein. The addition of protein to smoothies, water and other drinks has become a common trend in the food industry. However, there is actual research that supports its use.

     


    A study from the AHA Science Advisory that was published in the journal Circulation reveals that high protein diets have been seen since the 1960s. Unfortunately, there is a fine balance between adding too much protein to the diet and having enough to maintain weight loss. The high protein diets may not be appropriate for everyone, but the use of extra protein in drinks is supported.

     


    The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has found that protein may help prevent obesity because it is more satiating. This may explain the popularity of brands like Special K that focus on adding protein to products to help weight loss. Extra protein is also showing up in water, and Spartos Protein Water explains it can contribute to a diet plan while helping muscles recover. The protein water is also used to add additional minerals and vitamins to the diet by mixing all the elements in one drink. It is the same idea encouraged by the post in the New York Times that combines multiple nutrients in one recipe.
