One saying I learned before I went on my first African safari, was, "out of the vehicle, into the food chain." But we were lucky enough to enjoy breakfast served off the hood of our vehicle in the middle of the Serengeti as wildebeest and zebra walked on either side of the vehicle.

Animals in the Serengeti view vehicles as just part of the landscape, but the instant you get out of the vehicle, they immediately start paying close attention to you - and that's why all of these zebras were closely watching us. What a glorious moment!
