    How do you welcome summer?

With a Trip to the Beach

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     moniliform took these photos while visiting the beach of Santa Monica, California, for her 16th birthday.

The pier on the beach was built in 1909 and is a historic landmark in Southern California. It's open all year round and moniliform says she has a close emotional connection with the pier.

"A ride on the ferris wheel is the perfect summer activity because it's so innately happy," she says. "Once you're seated, the ferris wheel begins to move at a pace that's neither slow nor fast. It's exactly what an ideal summer is like - passing by neither too quickly nor too slowly."

This year moniliform will celebrate midsummer in Philadelphia and is already excited to meet people and take photos of an unfamiliar city.

When I was little, going on the ferris wheel on the pier was the mark of the beginning of summer.

School's out, and my friends and I have already gone to the beach on any day we have free time. There's something that's so freeing and humbling about being on the beach. The smell of the salty seaside air and the feeling of the wind brushing against you are as summery as it gets.

Of course, no trip to the beach would be complete without a ride on the ferris wheel. I welcome summer by getting in one of the brightly colored carriages and seeing the view from the top.
