    A Devotion to Learning

I can’t help by notice how eager young people in the developing world seem to be about education. They very much WANT to learn, and their thirst for knowledge and enthusiasm for education is a powerful and unstoppable force.

For whatever reason, I see this ambition and zeal most prominently in girls; And for good cause- they have the most to gain. They seem to understand the important doors that education can open for them, and the chance they will have to create a life of their own choosing rather than the one they were inteded for.

While walking through a village in rural Ghana, I met two girls sitting in a classroom, even though it was Sunday and their school was closed. They were studying math that afternoon, and had brought their books, pencils and their dreams with them, as they sat huddled together at a desk, focused on the numbers in front of them, knowing how valuable they will one day become.

We spoke for a bit, and I told them how impressed I was to find them there, working so hard on a Sunday. They beamed with pride from the recognition, and then they graciously allowed me to take their photograph.
