    How do you welcome summer?

    2013 Coney Island Mermaid Parade

Summer kicked off this weekend in Coney Island as mermaids and sea creatures made their way ashore for the 2013 Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Sailors docked their boats and a magical unicorn was spotted.

The parade which almost didn't take place thanks to Hurricane Sandy battering the community was saved by donations from over 2000 generous people in a successful Kickstarter campaign which raised over $100,000 dollars.

Hundreds of thousands of spectators lined the streets to watch as brightly colored mermaids, sea hags, sailors, mermen, painted bodies and floats made their way down Surf Avenue and to the boardwalk on what was a bright sunny day... perfect parade weather. I for one am looking forward to the 2014 Coney Island  Mermaid Parade. See ya next year!
