Suppression of Drug Trafficking in Thailand

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has expressed the Government's determination to suppress narcotics in the year 2013 by adhering to legal principles, respect of human life and making strict use of the law.

She made the statement in line with Thailand's national agenda on illicit drugs and in conjunction with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which was celebrated on the 26th of June.

Yingluck said that as a result of the Government's programs, the severity of the narcotics challenges have begun to decline. The Government also believes in a non-confrontational strategy that would allow society to be empowered through knowledge and participation.

According to the Prime Minister, authorities will put emphasis on four aspects, including prevention of individuals becoming involved with narcotics, overseeing the narcotics-prone areas and monitoring factors that contribute to narcotics involvement, prevention of relapses, and protecting communities from the threat of narcotic violence.
