Joplin, Missouri (CNN) -- A tornado struck Joplin, Missouri, on May 22, flattening buildings, destroying neighborhoods and killing more people than any other U.S. tornado since modern record-keeping began in 1950.
They had 24 minutes to escape the twister
A week after the storm, the death toll stood at 142.
