Ariel Sharon, whose half century as a military and political leader in Israel was marked with victories and controversies, died Saturday after eight years in a coma, Israeli Army Radio reported. Sharon was 85.
Sharon’s time as prime minister marked a rocky point in relations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, with military action at an early point of his time in office. Later, he agreed to meet with the newest prime minister, Mahmoud Abbas, and attempted to take steps towards peace.
