President Barack Obama recently announced he supports same-sex marriage, saying "all Americans should be treated ... equally." He reaffirmed his administration's legal position that the federal Defense of Marriage Act should be repealed, but the legalization of same-sex marriage should be left up to individual states. The pursuit of the repeal of DOMA [the federal Defense of Marriage Act], while leaving the legalization of same-sex marriages up to individual states.
His remarks came a day after North Carolina became the latest state to pass a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.
