CNN30: Mexico City earthquake

An 8.1-magnitude earthquake struck Mexico City on September 19, 1985, killing 10,000 people. The quake changed the city’s landscape within seconds -- approximately 6,000 buildings were destroyed or demolished -- and changed life for residents in one of the world's largest urban areas.

Within days after the earthquake, city authorities revised building codes, some structures that were determined unsafe for occupancy were demolished and others were rebuilt to newer, safer standards.
