CNN30: September 11 terror attacks

Nineteen hijackers commandeered four U.S. planes and crashed them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania in the world’s deadliest terrorist attacks. Nearly 3,000 people were killed. The attacks, orchestrated by Osama bin Laden and his militant Islamic group al Qaeda, led the U.S. to declare a “war on terror” that included a U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan and dramatic increases in airport and government security. Meanwhile, New Yorkers coped with enormous loss, fought off pervasive fear and demonstrated solidarity, strength and sensitivity rarely seen on the city's streets.
