Pope Benedict XVI will visit England and Scotland to hold public masses and beatify British Cardinal John Henry Newman, a Catholic convert who died in 1890 and is credited with helping rebuild Britain's Catholic community. He’s scheduled to visit Glasgow, Birmingham, and London from September 16-19.
Thousands are expected to attend the masses, but many protesters are also expected. The pope and the Catholic church have been criticized for their stance on human rights, child abuse, birth control and other issues. Some British residents are also angry about the high cost of the pope’s visit: about $31 million.
