On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 people and setting off a massive leak 5,000 feet below the water’s surface that flowed for three months.
The disaster prompted iReporter and Pensacola, Florida, resident James Amerson to write a simple, but poignant message in the sand – "Dear Gulf, I’ll miss you."
Now, we want to hear from other Gulf Coast residents. The challenge is easy: Head out to the beach and write a message in the sand that sums up your feelings one year later.
The deadline to upload photos of your sand messages is Sunday, April 17. The best submissions may be part of CNN’s coverage of the oil spill anniversary.
Update: Thank you for your submissions! This assignment is now closed. Check out this CNN.com story produced with your sand messages.
