Machu Picchu, Peru: Discovering Inca mysteries, mystique

Now is the perfect time to consider a visit to Machu Picchu, the iconic ancient city that is celebrating 100 years since its rediscovery.

Viewed by many as the "Lost City of the Incas," the landmark is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The majestic Huayna Picchu crests above the ruins, built into the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains along the upper Amazon Basin.

Machu Picchu was built in the 1400s as an estate for the Inca emporor Pachacuti. Hiram Bingham, an American historian, stumbled upon the ruins of it on July 24, 1911, during an expedition to Peru.

Many modern-day explorers choose to see Machu Picchu by taking the traditional four-day trek down the Inca Trail, one of the world's most famous journeys. Travelers get to experience frequent changes in elevation that introduce them to cloud forests, hills and the valleys below. The abundance of ruins and landmarks along the way are just a prelude to the spectacle that awaits them at the end.

Have you ever ventured out to Machu Picchu? Did you take the Inca Trail or use some other route to get there? Share your photos and videos of this majestic ancient city, and tell us what your journey was like.
