Masai Mara, Kenya
Prowling the open savannah of Kenya in search of elusive lions, giraffes and cheetahs is something so adventurous, most people only see it on TV.
A trip to Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve, part of CNN's Destination Adventure series, is a real-life African safari experience.
Located a few hours from Nairobi over land, the reserve is one of Kenya's most popular destinations. It's also one of the best places to view wildlife in the world; the "big five" are lions, leopards, elphants, buffalo and rhinoceros.
Wildebeests, gazelles and zebras complete migratory journeys out of Tanzania from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara at the end of June, and the late summer months are typically associated with being the best times to view wildlife.
Treks into the grasslands allow for great wildlife viewing, and staying in camps throughout the area is part of the journey. Some travelers choose to take a hot-air balloon ride over the reserve for up-high views.
