Women's World Cup showdown

The Japanese women's soccer team won the World Cup Sunday after defeating the United States on penalty kicks, rallying from a pair of one-goal deficits to capture its first-ever world title.

For the Japanese, their World Cup showing was a Cinderella story of a team everyone expected to underperform, and a country that was still recovering from a devastating tsunami and nuclear disaster. For the U.S., their team’s achievements inspired memories of the 1999 squad that secured the Cup in a legendary Rose Bowl match against China.
