On January 3, Nigerians began a national protest against the removal of a fuel subsidy and the subsequent spike in gas prices. At the urging of several major national trade unions, the protests spread to more cities around the country, with many demonstrators citing inspiration from the 'Occupy' movement. See an interactive timeline of the protests in our Open Story.
The strikes officially ended last week with President Goodluck Jonathan's announcement of a rollback in fuel prices, but the country recently suffered more unrest in the form of a string of bombings and attacks claimed to have been carried out by the militant Islamist group Boko Haram.
