Legendary coach Joe Paterno died Sunday morning, surrounded by his family, a statement by Mount Nittany Medical Center said.
Paterno, who became head coach at Penn State in 1966, was named National Coach of the Year five times, and lead the Nittany Lions to two national championships, five undefeated seasons, and top-25 finishes on 35 occasions, according to his official Penn State biography. He was inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2007.
He had been diagnosed with lung cancer shortly after his controversial separation from Penn State's football program last November. His separation came amidst a media storm surrounding sexual abuse accusations against his former defensive coordinator.
