Several people have died after police and paramilitary forces in Bangladesh battled with hundreds of thousands Islamists who had laid siege to part of the country's capital, Dhaka, local authorities said.
The protesters, members of the country's ultra-conservative Hefazat-e-Islami (Protectors of Islam) party, are calling on the government to enact laws that put to death anyone who blasphemes Islam.
The protests come several months after hundreds of thousands of demonstrators gathered in Dhaka to demand a ban on such fundamentalist parties and the death penalty for those who took part in war crimes during Bangladesh’s bloody independence battle with Pakistan.
