Sights and sounds of the 17-year cicadas

By early June, millions of periodical cicadas are expected to emerge across the East Coast after a 17-year period underground. The insects start to emerge when soil temperatures reach 64° F, filling the air with their distinct buzzing sound.

Are there cicadas near you, or are you still anticipating their arrival? We want to track the sights and sounds of the red-eyed bugs with your help. Submit photos or video of cicadas near you, and include information about where you’re located. Together, we’ll map the cicadas’ location and tell the story of their long-anticipated emergence.
